Example: Lesson Plan

Early/Elementary Education

SOLs: 5.1,  5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.9, 5.10, 5.11, 5.12, 5.13, 5.14, 5.15, 5.16.,  5.17, 5.18,5.20, 5.21, 5.23, 5.24

  • Objectives

    • The students will be able to create three dimensional works of art, the students will be able to discuss and understand recycled and conservational art. They will be able to create patterns and painting on cardboard.

III. Procedure:

  • a. Introduction

    • Day 1- introducing project, talking about recycling, talking about artists that reuse, reduce, recycle, showing them artworks made of cardboard,

    •  The students will learn about recycled artwork and how things can be reused to create artwork. Demonstration of what is to be learned and/or demo, start to brainstorm fish with worksheets- outline, which fish design they are doing, tracing it out onto cardboard-white cardboard, trace on brown part write name in middle of fish- finish: then start with criteria for fish, handouts with templates,

  • Development

    • If they want to design their own fish they will make their own handout sheet- I will have miniature versions of fish I’ve done as examples, then trace it 3-4 times, on the bottom, two shapes for the outline of the fish, practice for the final copy, figuring out patterns, trace circles and try different pattern ideas- marker, pencil drawing then go over with sharpie, little miniature versions of bigger versions, Be sure to draw the fish as large as the cardboard. I would try and cut the cardboard pieces no smaller than 5″ x 7″. It’s easier (and more fun) to paint a larger fish.105 students- cardboard

    • If you are using acrylic paints, it may not be necessary to paint a coat of white gesso over the fish. Acrylic paints are generally thick enough to cover any packaging printing.

    • If you are using liquid tempera paint, I would highly advise painting one coat of Gesso over the cardboard first. this will make the colors POP.

    • Once the BASE COAT is determined and finished, paint away! To help students pick happy, friendly colors (meaning when mixed together they won’t turn into a dull muddy color)

  • Summary

    • Students will be able to understand how artists create works of art out of anything and be able to create a cardboard fish.

  • Closure to the lesson (How will you end the lesson?)

    • As the students are done gluing on each part of their fish, I will have them place them on the drying rack, they will then clean up their space, throwing away any leftover cardboard pieces, putting away glue and cardboard cutters or scissors, they will then be able to do stations while everyone else is finishing.

  • IV. Materials needed for the lesson

    • Cardboard pieces about 10″ x 12″

    • Oil pastel or crayons

    • Assorted colors of acrylic paints

    • Scissors and cardboard cutters

    • White school glue

    • Small and medium brush

    • White printer paper

    • Pencils

    • Tracers (premade)

  • V. Evaluation Part A:How will you assess the students’ knowledge of the new skills taught? • Keep in mind the fact that your evaluation should be connected to your objective. You should be assessing for whatever you said the students would know and be able to do in the objective. VI. Adaptations/Remediation (For students with learning challenges)

    • That they are able to paint patterns as well as glue their pieces together to create a low relief fish. They finished their pieces.

  • How will you modify the lesson to meet the needs of students you expect to have difficulties?

    • Have students help their neighbors cut, or have an aid help, if they are not able to cut their pieces I will have options for students to take fish outlines so that they can create their own without having to cut out the pieces. They will be able to paint theirs, if they can not then they can have help.

VII. Extensions (For advanced/gifted students)

  • How will you change the lesson to meet the needs of students you know will master the concepts fairly quickly or already know the information presented in the lesson?

    • Students will be able to add layers to their pieces, if they would like to add more patterns and designs, they will be able to add a higher relief of cardboard as well.
